Half the circuit is in Northamptonshiree and half in Buckinghamshire, roughly equidistant from Milton Keynes and Northampton. It is built on the site of a World War II bomber base, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943.

The area around the town of Imola is a hotbed of racing passion. It is the region of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati as well as the town of Maranello, made famous by the Ferrari test facility located there.

The circuit, an interesting mix of slow turns and high-speed straights, is a modern and smooth racetrack with negligible changes in elevation.
